5 Apps That Notify You When and Where Something Is Streaming on TV
September 14, 2023

With the abundance of new movies and TV shows being released on various streaming platforms, it can be challenging to keep track of what you want to watch. Subscribing to Netflix, Disney Plus, and other services can make it even more overwhelming to stay informed about what’s happening. You also want to avoid encountering spoilers online before watching something yourself. While Google or Alexa can provide some information about upcoming seasons, this method may not be suitable for everyone.

So what is the best way to search for content available on streaming platforms? Writing on a sticky note? Adding to your phone’s calendar? Using a program reminder? While these methods can be useful, there are apps that can do the job better.

Here are my suggestions for free apps that help you manage the TV shows and movies you want to watch. They can notify you when new episodes are available for streaming or remind you to continue watching a show. Note that some of the apps mentioned below are integrated with Trakt, a web-based platform compatible with PCs, phones, and home media devices. However, we have excluded Trakt’s native app from the list because the focus is on standalone apps.

1. TV Time

TV Time is an app that allows you to track TV shows, movies, and reviews while connecting with fellow fans on social media. The app is available for both Android and Apple users, and you can sign up using your Google, Apple, Twitter, Facebook, or email accounts. Once you’re set up, you can select the shows (or networks) you’ve already watched. Notably, when browsing Hulu’s selections, only the originals are listed, but the app allows you to add more shows later.

2. JustWatch

JustWatch is known for its ability to track where a particular title is streaming. However, it also allows you to create a watchlist, stay updated on what’s coming soon, and start watching a show with just one click. When you open the app, you can select your preferred streaming services, such as Disney Plus, Crunchyroll, or Fubo, to find available shows and movies. JustWatch has a vast selection of over 100 sponsors and even includes a sports guide.

3. Hobi

Hobi is a popular app available on iOS and Android. It allows you to select the shows you want to watch or have already watched, and it will keep track of your progress. The app also adds shows to your watchlist. If a show has already ended, Hobi will let you know but will still remind you about upcoming episodes. The app’s “Discover” section showcases current shows, reruns for the week, new releases for the month, and recommendations from various brands and networks, including HBO and Netflix.

4. SeriesGuide

SeriesGuide is an app available for Android and Amazon Fire TV. It prides itself on being ad-free and not collecting your personal information. With SeriesGuide, you can keep track of your favorite TV shows and movies. To create playlists, you’ll need to set up a Trakt account. The app offers various categories under the TV Shows list, including genres, favorites, popular shows, and most-watched shows. Clicking on a list will display detailed information about the show and its seasons. You can even add a show to your watchlist by title, episode, or season.

5. Cinetrak

Cinetrak allows you to track TV shows and movies. However, you’ll need to create a Trakt account to create playlists. The app displays ads at the bottom of the screen, but its interface is clean and user-friendly. Under the TV Shows list, you’ll find titles categorized by genres, favorites, popular shows, and most-watched shows. Clicking on a list will provide detailed information about the show and its seasons. You can add a show by title, episode, or season by clicking the plus sign.

Streaming TV Tracker Software FAQs

What about privacy issues?

It’s important to review the privacy notices and settings for each app. JustWatch collects user data to personalize ads based on viewing preferences, while TV Time uses non-personal information for marketing and advertising purposes. TV Time allows you to adjust your account settings to private, preventing non-followers from seeing your activity. You can also delete connected social media accounts.

Do I have to pay to upgrade these apps?

While some of these apps offer paid upgrades, it is recommended to use the free versions unless you require additional features. The free versions are sufficient for basic reminders and tracking your show progress.

Why doesn’t Reelgood list future releases?

While Reelgood is a great platform for tracking movies and TV shows that have already been released or are arriving this month, it does not provide information about future months. JustWatch and TV Time, on the other hand, show release dates for upcoming seasons and the number of episodes. They also allow you to set notifications for when new episodes are available.
