President Biden delivered a strong endorsement of global alliances during his commencement speech at the Air Force Academy. He stressed that rebuilding relationships with like-minded countries was crucial for exerting American influence abroad against competitors like Russia and China. He reminded the graduates that their mission was greater than any individual or president and that they held the responsibility of safeguarding the values enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Despite the pandemic causing disruptions during their early days at the academy, the President commended the graduates for persevering throughout their four years and declared them ready for leadership.
The President reiterated that one of America’s greatest assets was its network of alliances and partners worldwide, which had played a vital role in bringing historic security assistance to Ukraine amidst its ongoing war with Russia. The President recognized the significance of cooperation with allies in confronting China’s economic and military aggression, North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, and other destabilizing factors across the globe. He also emphasized the need for competitive yet collaborative engagement with China that upholds America’s interests, values, and friends.
Apart from serious matters, President Biden also shared some lighthearted moments during his speech. He showed his pilot humor by noting the Air Force Academy’s altitude and joked about ensuring his Air Force One pilots would take him back safely to D.C. He observed the academy’s tradition of waiving minor infractions on the graduates’ school records and humorously wished that his speakers during his graduation had the same power.
