My Takeaway from Tim Keller: Joy through Self-Sacrificial Love

My Takeaway from Tim Keller: Joy through Self-Sacrificial Love

Tim Keller’s teaching offered a vastly different approach to life by pointing people towards Jesus and emphasizing a life of self-sacrificial service. Although this may seem unrealistic in a world that often prizes self-interest, Tim and his wife Kathy’s book, “The Meaning of Marriage,” argued that self-sacrificial love is the only practical way to achieve true fulfillment.

According to the Kellers, everyone will eventually realize that their spouse, whom they thought was perfect, is actually selfish. This realization goes both ways, and they believe the only way to move forward is through recognizing and controlling one’s own self-centeredness. True love is an action, not just an emotion, and in order for a marriage to flourish, both partners need to make daily sacrificial commitments to each other by learning to serve and be served. “We are not to live for ourselves but for the other,” the Kellers stated, emphasizing the crucial function of being a husband or a wife.

Tim was convinced that we are all wired to seek delight and that we can find it through God. “Anybody who has tasted the reality of God knows anything is worth losing for this,” he preached. Tim kept in touch with his friends even as he was dying of pancreatic cancer, and in one instance, he even joined their Zoom call from a hospital emergency room. Despite experiencing a lot of grief during his last few years, Tim’s faith became more real. In an essay for The Atlantic, he revealed that he had never experienced more happiness than he did in his final days.

As Tim’s health deteriorated, he remained confident, cheerful, and at peace, knowing that he was spiraling down towards death and up towards his maker. While his passing has made us all sad, listening to his sermons fills us with gratitude for his life and with the enduring question: Death, where is your victory? Where is your sting?
