Investigations Into Donald Trump: Current Status
June 9, 2023

Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, is currently under investigation by various state and federal agencies regarding his political and business activities.

One such investigation is being led by the Manhattan district attorney and involves 34 counts of felony against Mr. Trump, relating to his part in an alleged pay-off scheme to cover up a sex scandal and win the presidency in 2016. Another investigation is being conducted by a prosecutor in Georgia, focusing on Mr. Trump’s alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Jack Smith, the special counsel heading the documents case, is looking into Mr. Trump’s actions surrounding the January 6 attack on the Capitol and his efforts to dispute the results of the 2020 election.

Below is a detailed account of notable investigations that involve the former US president:

The Manhattan district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, has brought charges against Mr. Trump over his involvement in a pay-off to adult actress Stormy Daniels. She was poised to expose a sexual encounter with Mr. Trump during his election campaign, but was silenced when his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid her $130,000. Mr. Trump reportedly reimbursed Mr. Cohen for this payment, which prosecutors allege is a violation of the law. The case is scheduled to go to trial in March.

Prosecutors in Georgia are investigating Mr. Trump and some of his allies over allegations of interference with the results of the 2020 election in the state. Legal experts believe that Mr. Trump and his associates are at substantial risk of prosecution for violating various Georgia statutes.

A special grand jury has recommended indictments against more than a dozen people, including Mr. Trump, according to the forewoman, Emily Kohrs. Fulton County district attorney Fani T. Willis is expected to bring charges against them before a regular grand jury in August.

The House committee investigating the events surrounding the January 6 attack on the Capitol found that Mr. Trump and his allies had a plan to overturn the 2020 election. The committee’s 845-page report accused Mr. Trump of inciting insurrection and conspiracy to defraud the United States, leading to referrals for possible prosecution. Mr. Smith’s office has been examining Mr. Trump’s efforts to overturn the election by creating false slates of pro-Trump electors in key swing states. The office has also subpoenaed staff members from the Trump White House who may have been involved in firing the cybersecurity official who judged the 2020 election as the most secure in American history.

The New York attorney general, Letitia James, is investigating Mr. Trump’s alleged fraudulent overvaluation of his assets by billions of dollars to lenders and insurers. She seeks to bar him and his children, Donald Jr., Eric, and Ivanka, from running a business in New York. While civil in nature, Ms. James’s investigation has imposed an independent monitor to oversee the Trump Organization’s annual financial statements. The trial is set for October.
