If the hustle and bustle of the holidays caused you to overlook or miss the announcement that Amazon Prime Video will introduce ads next week, we are here to remind you. The introduction of commercials is scheduled for Monday, January 29th, unless, of course, you are willing to pay an additional fee. Amazon shared this news shortly after Christmas, sending out an email to users to inform them about the upcoming rollout of ads. The new ad-free option will require an extra $2.99 per month, making the monthly cost of a Prime subscription $17.98, and $11.98 for a standalone Prime Video subscription. Users will not be automatically switched to the new ad-free plan, but they have the option to “preorder” the new tier from Amazon’s website. Amazon’s rationale for this change is to continue investing in compelling content and to increase that investment over a prolonged period of time. The specifics of how many ads will be shown in the ad-supported tier are yet to be disclosed, but Amazon assures that the aim is to have “meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers.” This move follows the company’s initial announcement last September to incorporate ads into Prime Video, joining other streaming services such as Netflix and Disney Plus that have also adopted commercials as a source of additional revenue. Prior to this change, Prime Video stood out as one of the few major streaming platforms without ad-supported plans, with the exception of Apple TV Plus.
