Inventor @hayleylovesinstigating took to TikTok to showcase their pulley system that transports groceries up to their fifth floor apartment on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. A bag full of oranges, milk, soft drinks, and a dozen Poppi’s sodas hung on a rope from the fifth floor to the lobby. They are residing in walk-up apartments in the Big Apple to cover their rent. One user commented, “I saw one of my neighbors taking out his trash like this the other week.” Another resident said, “The recorded voice is real from a LES 5th floor walkup girly.” Many social media users tagged their friends and encouraged them to consider installing a similar pulley system. One person tagged a friend and wrote, “Want something like this… a step into the future?” The video garnered nearly 70,000 views and 10,000 likes within 12 hours of being posted on Thursday. The video has sparked a lot of engagement from social media users. Residents opt for walk-up apartments in the Big Apple to save on rent. Despite the heart-pounding and legs-burning experience of climbing endless stairs, the content creator is not planning to move out anytime soon. The Lower East Side is among the neighborhoods in New York City where walk-up buildings are common, including the Upper West Side, the East Village, and Chinatown. Most walk-up apartments are five stories tall, but some can go as high as six or seven stories. According to reports from real estate research firm UrbanDigs, over 15 walk-up buildings on the Lower East Side have six or seven stories. These buildings were constructed before 1968, as the city’s Department of Construction requires buildings with five stories or more to have an elevator. Despite the physical challenges of climbing endless stairs, the designer has no plans to relocate. “We were just meant to be at LES,” Haley, a recent college graduate, humorously noted in the caption.
