Meta is counting on the launch of Apple Vision Pro to help boost its VR headset business. A new report from The Wall Street Journal suggests that Meta expects Vision Pro to “energize its $50 billion operations, which have not yet been well-received by consumers.” Executives at Meta, including Mark Zuckerberg, hold an “optimistic” view of the Vision Pro launch, believing that Apple’s entry into the field will validate their existing business and attract more consumers. Meta’s staff sees Vision Pro and its software ecosystem as a potential replacement for Apple, similar to the role played by Google’s Android in smartphones. Meta managers and industry insiders anticipate software developers playing a crucial role in creating software that will attract more users. Although Vision Pro has not yet been released, the product has already influenced Meta’s strategy, leading the company to focus more on mixed reality. This shift in focus is towards mixed reality, enabling users to view layered images alongside real-world events, as opposed to Meta’s previously emphasized concept of the metaverse, where people interact in a blended reality. Apple executives have previously expressed skepticism about the concept of the “metaverse” with Greg Joswiak refusing to use the term and Tim Cook questioning its widespread understanding among the general public. 9to5Mac’s Take I’m eager to see how this strategy plays out for Meta. If history is any guide, counting on Apple’s foothold in the market to be more beneficial than detrimental may not be a wise decision. Notably, this is just the beginning of Apple’s plans in this space, with the company already working on an affordable version of the Vision Pro and pursuing a range of glasses.
