The announcement for iOS 18 is expected to be made at Apple’s annual WWDC event in June. Gurman wrote in his latest Power On newsletter, “I’ve been informed that this new operating system is seen within the company as one of the most significant changes to iOS–if not the largest–in the company’s history.” “With this information, Apple’s developer conference in June should be very interesting.” This news follows previous reports by Gurman, stating that Apple foresees iOS 18 to be the most “demanding and compelling” in years. While the latest report does not delve into specifics, Gurman has previously suggested that Apple is preparing to introduce a new Siri capable of supporting a new AI system. The company is also projected to roll out new features that elevate Siri and the Messages app’s ability to construct sentences and handle queries. Furthermore, Apple Music is set to receive its own playlist, similar to the offering introduced by Spotify last year. Apple is reportedly exploring the integration of artificial intelligence into development tools such as Xcode to enable faster app development by developers. Additionally, Apple’s native apps, such as Pages and Keynotes, are expected to receive AI updates. iOS 18 may also bring about RCS support, following Apple’s announcement in November that it intends to integrate RCS support into the iOS standard by 2024, in addition to SMS or MMS. This significant change comes in response to public pressure for Apple to include RCS support for iPhones. It’s noteworthy that even if Apple plans to adopt RCS, the company has affirmed that messages sent from Android users to iPhones will continue to be displayed in green bubbles. As we are still four months away from the unveiling of iOS 18, we can anticipate learning more about the software changes as we approach the official announcement in the coming months.
