The Pentagon released the names of three American service members who were killed in a drone attack at a base in northeast Jordan. The Defense Department identified the soldiers as Sgt. William Jerome Rivers, Spc. Kennedy Ladon Sanders, and Spc. Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, who died on January 28, 2024. The attack occurred when an unmanned aerial system impacted their container housing units.

Spc. Moffett’s mother, Francine Moffett, described her daughter as a smart, beautiful young woman who loved to laugh, was outgoing, and had many friends. She was proud to wear her military uniform and had a passion for serving and helping others.

Pentagon deputy press Secretary Sabrina Singh stated that the attack was different from previous ones due to its location in living quarters and timing early in the morning when people were still in their beds. She attributed the attack to an Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-backed militia, with characteristics resembling Kataib Hezbollah.

The outpost, known as Tower 22, where the attack took place, is deployed with roughly 350 U.S. Army and Air Force personnel. U.S. Central Command reported that over 40 service members were injured, with some in critical condition but all now stable. The soldiers were in their sleeping quarters at the time of the strike, marking it as one of the deadliest attacks on U.S. service members since the 2021 suicide bombing in Kabul during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
