Google closed the year 2023 with a significant Pixel Feature Drop that prioritized the camera. The Pixel 8 Pro received Video Boost + Night Sight Video, while the 8/Pro got Night Sight timelapse. Additionally, both models gained the ability to convert into a laptop/desktop webcam. The Pixel Fold’s update included Dual Screens and a customizable software interface, with a similar option for the tablet. In contrast, the recent January Update introduces the Thermometer app for the Pixel 8 Pro to measure body temperature. The 8 and 8 Pro will soon have Circle to Search. It’s worth noting that the Thermometer update was delayed until March, as Google secured the license only in mid-December. On the other hand, Circle to Search was promptly released as it is a popular feature. Google opted to brand and present these updates as a Feature Drop rather than just through blog posts. However, the release of the Feature Drop in January has caused uncertainty regarding the 2024 Feature Drop cycle. This raises questions about the possibility of another drop in March. Additionally, the launch of QPR2 in February further complicates the situation, as the Bluetooth menu in Quick Settings has been identified as a significant feature of the Quarterly Platform Release. It’s surprising that these Pixel updates do not seem to align with the additions or changes in QPR, indicating a lack of coordination between the teams. The early start of the QPR cycle in November, rather than December, may suggest that Google aims to release Android 15 a month ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, Google may consider a new name for the Gemini Nano Smart Reply feature, and Google TV ads now feature Samsung’s Android gesture navigation. Moreover, the ‘Earth View’ graphics have been disabled by Google. These developments mark the beginning of 2024 for Google. Other news includes Samsung’s cost-saving measures on built-in displays and Fossil’s sustained support for Wear OS. However, Wear OS only holds a 2% market share. Android’s eSIM replacement tool has expanded, although it still falls short of expectations in terms of collaboration with other companies. Lastly, Apple anticipates that iOS 18 could be a significant release.
