A Russian-occupied city was struck by a Ukrainian rocket, hitting a bakery and resulting in the deaths of at least 28 people, including nine women and a child, over the weekend, according to Moscow officials.
Leaders backed by Russia in the occupied Luhansk region claimed that Ukraine targeted the Adriatic Restaurant in the city of Lysychansk on Saturday using a US-supplied shell.
The bakery, located within the restaurant and serving civilians, was hit by the explosion, causing the victims to be trapped under the rubble, stated Moscow-appointed official Leonid Pasechnik.
Pasechnik reported that 28 people lost their lives in the incident, and another 10 individuals were promptly rescued from the debris. By Sunday morning, at least four more people were extricated, all in critical condition, as confirmed by Russia’s emergency ministry.
In response to the strike, Moscow’s Foreign Ministry expressed condemnation and sought to use the incident to caution the European Union about the potential use of its funds, following the EU’s agreement to allocate over $54 billion to Kyiv.
The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated, “EU citizens should know how their taxes are used – they are used to buy deadly weapons systems and send them to the Kyiv regime which uses them to kill civilians.”
As of now, Ukrainian officials have not issued any comments regarding the attack on Saturday.
The explosion in Luhansk took place amid an intensified series of confrontations between Moscow and Kyiv over the past 24 hours, with Ukraine’s General Staff alerting on Sunday that Russia has increased its offensives along the front lines.
According to Donetsk regional Gov. Vadym Filashkin, at least one civilian was killed and two others were injured due to Russian artillery fire aimed at the border town of Toretsk.
Kyiv officials disclosed that Russia conducted 16 separate attacks on northern communities, while Ukraine also initiated a series of counterattacks.
Reports emerged on Saturday indicating that a pair of Ukrainian drones targeted a major oil refinery in southwest Russia, resulting in a fire and constituting the latest assault against the Kremlin’s fuel facilities.
The drone strike impacted a refinery owned by Lukoil, a significant player in the Russian oil and gas industry.
An unnamed Ukrainian source informed Reuters, “By hitting oil refineries working for the Russian military-industrial complex, we not only cut off the logistics of fuel supplies for enemy equipment but also reduce the filling of the Russian budget.”
