When the Apple Vision Pro App Store made its debut, it was missing popular apps such as Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify. However, YouTube has hinted at a potential future release for its app on the Vision Pro, as reported by The Verge.
YouTube Plans to Release an App for Apple Vision Pro
YouTube expressed its enthusiasm for the launch of Vision Pro and confirmed the development of an app, without specifying a timeline. The company stated:
“We’re excited to see Vision Pro launched and support it by ensuring YouTube users have the best experience in Safari. We don’t have any specific plans to share at this time, but we can confirm that the Vision Pro app is on our way.”YouTube and its parent company, Google, have historically taken some time to adopt Apple’s new features, so it remains uncertain when the YouTube app will be available on the device. In the interim, a programmer named Christian Selig has created a program called “Juno” for viewing YouTube on Vision Pro, and YouTube videos can also be accessed through the Safari browser. However, neither Juno nor YouTube’s web version permit Vision Pro users to watch 360 and 3D YouTube videos. An Apple spokesperson told The Verge that this is due to the fact that the content is “designed for devices that don’t offer the highest quality features.”
In some instances, this may also result in subpar performance. Our focus is on delivering an exceptional TV experience, including images and videos on location, Apple Immersive Video, and 3D movies available on Apple TV. There is no information on whether the final YouTube app will support 3D content. Apple has indicated that it is working on support for WebXR content, which could enable the viewing of YouTube VR videos online using Safari, although it is still a relatively new standard. WebXR, in the words of Apple, “doesn’t fully utilize the power, functionality, and connectivity of Apple Vision Pro and visionOS,” but Apple is contributing to W3C web standards, including WebXR.
