Switch Sales Have Surpassed 139 Million Units and Will Be the Core Business in 2024, According to Nintendo PresidentPhoto: Zion Grassl / Nintendo LifeNintendo has published its latest financial results, reporting that Switch Hardware sales have reached 139.36 million units (as of December 31, 2023) since its launch in March 2017. This marks an increase from 132.46 million in November. In addition, Nintendo revealed the hardware sales and gross profit for the year following the holiday season. According to Bloomberg, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated in a meeting after the report’s release that the Switch, particularly the current model, will continue to be the company’s “major business” in 2024, and declined to comment on plans for new hardware. The company anticipates a sales figure of 15.5 million units for the Switch by the end of the fiscal year in March, an increase of half a million units, including 5 million additional software units. Total sales were down by 6% year-over-year, although the decrease was lesser than expected and not surprising given that the Switch is now in its seventh year on the market. The system continues to surpass expectations as it nears its eighth year, while rumors of new Nintendo hardware persist. Elsewhere, gross profit rose by 11.5% year-on-year, operating profit by 13.1%, and sales of “mobile and IP-related business” grew by 93.4% due to increased video-related sales and higher royalties, as per the report.

The number of users who played apps in 2023 also increased to 122 million. Here’s a breakdown of the hardware and sales for the three quarters of the fiscal year: Hardware sales FY2024/Apr-Dec: 13.74 million Total Standard Switch sales FY2024/Apr-Dec: 3.4 million Total Switch OLED sales FY2024/Apr-Dec: 8.17 million Total Switch Lite sales FY2024/Apr-Dec: 2.18 million As of December 31, 2023, Nintendo’s total hardware sales are as follows:

Super Family Computer / SNES 49.10

The Switch remains dominant, and although fans and experts are eager to learn more about ‘Switch 2’, it appears Nintendo is in no rush to announce it. What are your thoughts on these statistics?
