China’s Foreign Ministry announced that Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat, will be traveling to Russia for security talks. This visit is part of a series of high-level exchanges between the two countries.

Wang’s visit is at the invitation of Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of Russia’s security council, and it is described as a “routine event” by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The main objective of the trip is to enhance bilateral relations and engage in comprehensive discussions on strategic security matters.

China and Russia are strategic allies, and they often emphasize their comprehensive partnership involving economic and military cooperation.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Wang would meet Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, to focus on strengthening collaboration on the international stage.

During the meeting, there will be discussions on finding a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine and ensuring stability and security in the Asia-Pacific region.

China has positioned itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine war, providing diplomatic and financial support to Russia without directly involving itself in the conflict or supplying lethal weapons.

In the past month, Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu visited Russia and Belarus to advocate for closer military cooperation.

Both countries are expected to maintain frequent high-level contacts, with Russian President Vladimir Putin planning to visit China in October, as announced by one of his aides in July.

In March, President Xi Jinping of China made a state visit to Moscow, signaling the start of a new era in bilateral relations.

During the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok last week, President Putin commented to Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing that the Russia-China relationship had reached an unprecedented and historical level.
