Apple has just released iOS 17.0.1 to the public, which is less than a week after the release of iOS 17 and a day before the launch of the iPhone 15. Apple advises everyone to download this update immediately as it includes three important security features.
To download the update, go to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone and follow the instructions.
If you are an iOS developer or beta tester, you will need to disable beta access in order to download the update. Go to Settings > General > Software Updates > Beta Updates and toggle it off.
According to Apple, this update addresses a vulnerability in WebKit, which is the engine that powers Safari and other third-party browsers on iOS. This vulnerability could potentially be exploited to steal user data or compromise the security of the device. IT services company Okta has also confirmed the potential risks associated with this vulnerability.
Another issue that this update addresses is a vulnerability in the iOS kernel, which is the core of the iPhone’s operating system. This vulnerability could potentially allow an attacker to gain access to sensitive information stored on the device. Additionally, there is a flaw that could be exploited to bypass signature verification.
