Valve released the Steam Deck in February 2022, and they have no plans for an upgrade in the near future.

When asked about potential upgrades, Steam Deck developer Pierre-Loup Griffais stated in a tweet to CNBC on Thursday that the current hardware is optimized for playing modern PC games and will remain stable for “several years.”

“Right now, I believe it provides a great gaming experience,” Griffais said.

Griffais reiterated this in an interview with The Verge, stating that Valve’s priority is not sacrificing battery life for performance improvements.

“I don’t anticipate a significant upgrade in the next few years,” Griffais told the publication, “but we are keeping an eye on advancements in architecture and manufacturing processes to see how things evolve.”

Despite being relatively new, the Steam Deck received positive feedback from former CNET editor Dan Ackerman, who noted various improvements made within a year of its release.

“Since its launch in February of the previous year,” wrote Mr. Ackerman, “Steam has made enhancements such as overall performance improvements, intelligent cooling and fan acceleration, compatibility with a wide range of Steam games, improved game library organization and control, UI changes, faster shutdown with automatic shutdown, increased customization options, and better support for MicroSD storage.”

Since the release of the Steam Deck, other hardware manufacturers like Logitech, Asus, and Razer have also entered the market with their own portable gaming devices. Lenovo is set to launch the Legion Go in October, while Sony will unveil the PlayStation Portal later this year.
