Despite Governor Doug Burgum’s success in the business world and in developing Fargo, North Dakota, as a diverse and thriving city, many North Dakotans are skeptical of his presidential ambitions. Fargo is a small town, far removed from the political currents of the nation’s larger cities. Due to the crowded Republican primary field, it is unclear what some of the contenders, including Governor Burgum, truly hope to accomplish with their campaigns. Governor Burgum’s billion-dollar fortune ensures that he will have resources, but it might not be enough to get him on the debate stage or make him a household name. While some voters are impressed by Governor Burgum’s non-partisan leadership style, others take issue with his policy decisions, like signing bills that banned gender transition care, abortion, and L.G.B.T.Q. discussions in elementary schools. Despite this mixed reception, many of Burgum’s rally attendees were past and present elected officials, leading some to speculate that he has significant political power in North Dakota. Ultimately, while some see Governor Burgum as a genuine believer in his own presidential prospects, others consider him a long shot.
