The Martha Graham Dance Company is marking its 100th anniversary this autumn, with plans for a celebratory three-season programme. Founded by choreographer Martha Graham when she was just 31 in 1926, the dance school and troupe is the oldest of its kind in the US. Audiences will be treated to new access points to classics of modern dance, making them relevant to current times, said artistic director Janet Eilber. The multi-season celebration will kick off in September, set around three themes reflecting the company’s journey. Graham’s social activism, Americana, and modernism and her psychological works and partnership with visual artist Isamu Noguchi will be explored, as will the question “What is an American?” The company will tour 13 US cities and internationally.
