Researchers in Texas have developed a device designed to separate the brain from the body and keep it alive for scientific research purposes. This breakthrough has the potential to enhance heart-lung bypass technology. While the initial trials were conducted on pigs, the ultimate goal is to apply this technology to humans in the future. The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center successfully isolated and maintained blood flow to the brains of anesthetized pigs using the new extracorporeal pulsatile circulatory control (EPCC) device for a period of five hours. The brains functioned without the influence of the body during this time, demonstrating the potential of this innovative method. By publishing their findings in the journal Scientific Reports, the research team aims to highlight the possibilities that this new brain isolation technique brings, including the ability to conduct research on brain function independently from other bodily processes. The EPCC device’s unique pulsatile flow design sets it apart from existing cardiopulmonary bypass machines, offering a more natural blood flow to the brain and potentially reducing brain-related side effects associated with traditional bypass technology. The device also features advanced algorithms to regulate various variables such as blood pressure, volume, temperature, oxygenation, and nutrients.
