February 8, 2024

Octopath Traveler II - HikariPhoto: Square EnixKadokawa, the owner of FromSoftware and Spike Chunsoft, has officially acquired Acquire Corp., the studio responsible for Octopath Traveler. According to VGC, Kadokawa has declared Acquire as its “full partner” in its latest financial statement, revealing its aim to “enhance the creation of intellectual property (IP) in games.” The company has several game titles in development for both console and mobile platforms. It has established ACQUIRE Corp. as a limited company to promote the creation of IP in games. Highlighting Acquire’s track record of producing multi-million selling titles, Kadokawa hopes to collaborate with relevant organizations in the gaming industry, strengthen its planning and development capabilities across the group, and expand its portfolio of console games. It appears that Acquire will retain its identity, having previously collaborated with Square Enix on Octopath Traveler and its sequel, as well as with FromSoftware on the Japanese release of Tenchu: Shadow Assassins for the Wii. This acquisition signals the potential for synergies between the companies. What are your thoughts on this development? Share your views in the comments.
