The New York Times reported on Friday that a student manager of Alabama’s men’s basketball team, Cooper Lee, was present during a deadly shooting in Tuscaloosa in January. Lee confirmed to The Times that he had been riding in a car with a star player, Brandon Miller, just minutes before the shooting, during which Mr. Miller’s car was hit with stray bullets. Another player, Kai Spears, had previously been identified by The Times as being in the car; however, Spears denied this and filed a lawsuit because he was labeled falsely as being in the car when the incident occurred. Spears claimed that this false identification will forever label him as a person associated with murder. Two people have been charged with capital murder associated with the shooting. Lee is not accused of any wrongdoing and was present at the scene only by chance.
