Alicia Keys has spent over 10 years creating a musical based on her childhood in New York City. Titled “Hell’s Kitchen,” the musical will make its debut this fall at the Public Theater. Keys, an R&B and pop star, has created both the music and some of the lyrics for the show. The story centers around a character named Ali, a 17-year-old girl who, like Keys, is a pianist growing up in Manhattan Plaza. Despite the show not being an exact retelling of Keys’s life, there are notable similarities in the plot and characters. The musical will feature 20 cast members and carries a large budget. The Public Theater plans to showcase “Hell’s Kitchen” from October 24 to November 19, with emerging actor Maleah Joi Moon portraying Ali.
