An outbreak of Listeria infection linked to dairy and salad products

February 10, 2024

According to Texas Health and Human Services, there is a Listeria outbreak linked to certain food items as people gear up for the Super Bowl weekend.

The outbreak has resulted in two deaths, one of which was in Texas, and over two dozen reported illnesses, the agency stated.

Listeria is a type of bacterium that can cause severe infection, particularly in pregnant women and individuals over 65 or with compromised immune systems, THHSC explained on its website.

The products subject to recall include sauces, salad dressings, meal kits, and other items available at H-E-B, Walmart, Trader Joe’s, and various other stores in Texas, as per the agency’s announcement.

The initial public health alert from Texas officials specifies queso fresco and cotija cheese from Rizo Lopez Foods Inc. along with other products, as indicated on the FDA website.

For a complete list of recalled items, you can visit the FDA website.
