During Apple’s “Wonderlust” event on Tuesday, many of the changes announced focused on the company’s commitment to making all its products carbon neutral by 2030. One significant change is the elimination of leather from Apple’s devices, including monitors and iPhones.
Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environmental, policy, and social affairs, explained, “Leather is commonly used in hardware, but it has a significant environmental impact. To reduce our ecological footprint, we will discontinue the use of leather in all new Apple products, including watches, starting today.”

Lisa Jackson discusses Apple’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
With the removal of leather from Apple’s devices, the company aims to establish more environmentally friendly alternatives. One of these products is called “FineWoven,” which is made with 68% post-consumer recycled content. While offering a sleek and suede-like appearance, FineWoven is less breathable than leather.
Apple will also utilize the FineWoven material for iPhone MagSafe cases and wallets, as well as the Magnetic Link and Modern Buckle Apple Watch bands.
The Apple Watch Series 9 introduces several technical improvements, including faster functionality, enhancements to Siri, and a new way to interact with the watch through the Double Tap feature.
Furthermore, the Apple Watch Ultra, Apple’s top outdoor watch, will be released on September 22 and also features the Double Tap functionality.
