FT montage/AFP/Getty Images Apple is quietly enhancing its capabilities in artificial intelligence, making numerous product releases, hiring staff, and making hardware adjustments in order to integrate AI into its upcoming iPhones. Company data, academic papers, and information from industry insiders all indicate that the California-based company is concentrating on addressing the technical challenge of powering AI through mobile devices. According to a survey by PitchBook, the iPhone manufacturer has surpassed its Big Tech competitors in its acquisition of AI startups, having acquired 21 since the beginning of 2017. The most recent of these acquisitions was the purchase of California-based WaveOne in early 2023, which specializes in AI video compression. “They are planning to do significant M&A,” said Daniel Ives of Wedbush Securities. “I’d be surprised if they don’t play a major role in AI this year, given the ongoing AI hardware competition, and Apple won’t be left behind.” According to a recent study by Morgan Stanley, nearly half of Apple’s AI projects now involve the term “Deep Learning,” which refers to AI algorithms — models capable of rapidly generating text, audio, and code. The company also hired Google’s AI chief, John Giannandrea, in 2018. Apple has kept its AI plans under wraps while its Big Tech competitors, such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, invest billions in the technology. Nonetheless, industry sources suggest that the company is leveraging its diverse array of language-based technologies to drive AI products, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
