Beyond smoking: Understanding and treating Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
January 28, 2024

The main cause of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is smoking, but other factors like environmental toxins, genetic predispositions, and occupational hazards are also involved. This lung disease is characterized by breathlessness, cough, and excessive mucus production. Factors such as microscopic dust particles from industrial processes, air pollution, and burning biomass fuel can contribute to the decline of lung function. Sharing air with smokers, recurring respiratory infections, childhood respiratory illnesses, frequent bouts of bronchitis, long-standing asthma, and indoor pollution are also associated with increased risk for developing COPD. Addressing these causes can pave the way for targeted prevention strategies, early diagnosis and intervention, and comprehensive treatment plans. Dr. Ashok K Rajput emphasized the need for public policy changes, increased awareness and screening programs, and tailored treatment plans to improve COPD management and optimize quality of life. Dr. Manoj Kuterri recommended a holistic approach to COPD management, including addressing comorbidities, adopting lifestyle changes, and enhancing overall quality of life. He highlighted the importance of quitting smoking, regular physical activity, reducing exposure to respiratory irritants, maintaining a nutritious diet, and practicing breathing exercises like Pranayama. Dr. Neel Thakkar stressed the critical need for a comprehensive approach to COPD care, including lifestyle changes, anti-addiction strategies, nutritional considerations, breathing exercises, vaccination, and regular monitoring. He also mentioned the importance of non-pharmacologic therapies, oxygen therapy for individuals with severe COPD, and innovative approaches for targeted relief and individualized rehabilitation plans. He pointed out the evolving landscape of COPD care, where preventive measures play a pivotal role in managing the disease and mitigating symptoms. With COPD ranking as the third leading cause of death worldwide, the call to action is clear. ‘Breathing is Life. Act Earlier’ draws attention to the critical need for awareness and united efforts to mitigate the impact of this pervasive respiratory ailment and enhance the well-being of those affected.
