On Friday, Boris Johnson, the former Prime Minister of Britain, made headlines once again by resigning from his parliamentary seat. This is just the latest chapter in the career of one of the country’s most lively and controversial politicians.
Johnson has been the focus of scrutiny from a House of Commons committee investigating allegations that he misled Parliament regarding his involvement in lockdown-breaking parties at Downing Street during the COVID-19 pandemic. When he received a confidential copy of the committee’s findings, he accused the committee of attempting to force him out. He stated, “They have still not produced a shred of evidence that I knowingly or recklessly misled the Commons.”
The powerful committee had the authority to recommend a sanction that could have resulted in Johnson being required to fight an election to keep his constituency just outside of London, which he might have lost.
Instead of dealing with that uncertainty, the former Prime Minister chose to pre-empt that possibility by resigning. This means that there will be a by-election in his constituency, one that Johnson claims he will not compete in.
