Chelsea Says Executive Accused of Bullying Has Left the Club
June 3, 2023

The senior executive accused of workplace bullying at Chelsea F.C. has left the club almost a year after the team initiated an investigation into the matter. The accusations against Gary Twelvetree, the former Chelsea director of marketing, were reported in a New York Times article last year. The article featured interviews with almost a dozen Chelsea employees who described the toxic workplace culture inside the marketing department led by Twelvetree, who reportedly humiliated and berated staff members in front of others. Some employees took mental health leave to cope with the pressure, and some quit their jobs. The negativity created by Twelvetree’s leadership was also reportedly linked to the death of Richard Bignell, a former member of the department who committed suicide after reportedly being forced out from his job at Chelsea. The ownership of Chelsea transferred to an American-led group, who then launched an investigation into the accusations led by outside lawyers. It is unclear how many people the investigators interviewed or how they were selected. As of now, there have been no further details regarding the findings of the investigation or any changes made as a result. Chelsea has not revealed the terms of Twelvetree’s exit from the club.
