Chuck Todd, who has served as as the moderator for NBC’s popular Sunday morning program “Meet the Press” for the past nine years, has announced that he will be stepping down from this role. His successor will be Kristen Welker, NBC’s chief White House correspondent.
In a statement on the show’s most recent broadcast, Todd, age 50, said he believes it is time for him to move on from the role, noting that it’s better to leave “a little bit too soon than stay a tad too long.” Todd added that he has allowed work to consume him for the majority of his nearly 30-year long career, and shared that he no longer wants to do so.
Todd, a seasoned political journalist in Washington, took over as moderator of “Meet the Press” in 2014. His recent interview guests have included former Vice President Mike Pence, Vice President Kamala Harris, Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy, and Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, who serves as the House minority leader.
In a memo, Rebecca Blumenstein, the president of editorial for NBC News, and Carrie Budoff Brown, the network’s senior vice president of politics, thanked Todd and reflected on his impressive contributions to the show and to political journalism overall. They noted that Todd will remain with NBC as the chief political analyst.
