The use of cinnamon has a long history and it has been utilized for various purposes such as a condiment, anointing oil, and for therapeutic reasons. It was used by ancient Egyptians for flavoring and aroma, while the Romans used it for healing respiratory and stomach conditions. Recent studies have shown that cinnamon has antibacterial, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and even anticancer properties.
Studies have found that taking supplements containing cinnamon may help in lowering blood sugar levels in individuals who are overweight, obese, or prediabetic. In a 4-week randomized, double-blind crossover trial of cinnamon supplementation, researchers enrolled 18 individuals with prediabetes and overweight or obesity. The participants were instructed to abstain from all items containing cinnamon and to follow a low-polyphenol “beige” diet for two weeks. They were then split into two groups: one for the treatment and the other for a placebo.
A total of 16 identical capsules were given to each group each day; 8 were to be taken with breakfast and 8 with dinner. The placebo capsules contained maltodextrin, while the capsules in the treatment group contained cinnamon.
The subjects were instructed to stick to their diet and take the capsules as directed for a duration of four weeks. Following four weeks, the researchers switched groups after a two-week “washout” period during which they did not take any capsules. The researchers and subjects were unaware of who was given a placebo and who was given cinnamon. Researchers used a continuous glucose monitoring device to keep an eye on the participants’ blood glucose levels. Additionally, the subjects provided blood samples for an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at four different times during the study.
After analyzing the results, researchers found that participants who took cinnamon consistently exhibited lower blood glucose levels and lower glucose peaks than those on placebo. The study suggested that cinnamon may help in improving gut health and increasing insulin sensitivity, leading to better glucose metabolism.
Cinnamon provides numerous health benefits, including its ability to regulate blood sugar levels, combat inflammation and oxidative stress, fight infections, promote oral health, lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and aid in weight management. Adding cinnamon to your diet can contribute to overall well-being and promote a healthier lifestyle.
