CNN Tries to Change the Channel From Wall-to-Wall Chaos

CNN’s editorial call on Thursday morning was unusual as former chairman Chris Licht was not present. Virginia Moseley, one of three network veterans in charge of the newsroom, led the call with a focus on news coverage rather than mentioning Mr. Licht’s dismissal the day before. The new leaders of CNN sent a memo to employees acknowledging recent changes and the impact they may have had. However, some journalists expressed frustration about the wall-to-wall coverage and they hope it will end soon. CNN faces many challenges, including its traditional business, digital transformation, and programming slots in CNN’s lineup that remain unfinished. Athan Stephanopoulos, CNN’s chief digital officer, has set out a plan to generate $1 billion, the company is considering new anchors for the morning programming slot, and they will host a series of town hall forums for presidential contenders, including former Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey. Mr. Zaslav, CEO of CNN’s parent company, is committed to a recruiting process and even if it takes months to find a permanent replacement for Mr. Licht.
