The recent devastating earthquake in central Morocco, claiming the lives of at least 2,900 people, was an unprecedented event in this region, resulting in a catastrophically high death toll.
Our reporter, Claire Parker, has witnessed the devastation firsthand in the remote villages that were severely affected.
Parker states, “It’s a stark contrast to previous earthquakes, such as the ones in Syria and Turkey earlier this year, where survivors were found days later. This partially stems from the fact that the construction of buildings in this area is exceptionally subpar.”
Days have passed since the tragedy, and countless survivors are still waiting for basic necessities, feeling abandoned and forgotten. Strangely, Morocco has been unwilling to accept outside assistance, bewildering foreign governments that are eager to help. Consequently, ordinary Moroccans have taken it upon themselves to fill the void left by the absence of government aid.
Parker remarks, “The incredible solidarity displayed by ordinary Moroccans is awe-inspiring. We’ve witnessed countless small cars braving treacherous mountain roads, laden with essential supplies like blankets, milk, water, and diapers, all driven by a profound sense of obligation to help.”
The country has declared three days of nationwide mourning, with rescue and recovery teams mobilizing to provide relief. Some survivors have recounted harrowing tales of using their bare hands to free their loved ones from the wreckage.
