Despite a Handshake, a ‘Thaw’ in U.S.-China Relations Seems Far From Reach

Despite a Handshake, a ‘Thaw’ in U.S.-China Relations Seems Far From Reach

The past few weeks saw a surge in meetings between American and Chinese officials, giving the impression that tensions were easing between the two countries. However, China’s recent strong-arm tactics in other areas have complicated what President Biden had described as a “thaw” in U.S.-China relations. Rather than reciprocating the U.S.’s efforts to ease tensions, Beijing has imposed more tech restrictions, demanded the lifting of sanctions, and called into question Washington’s intentions. Last week, China’s defense minister rejected the invitation to meet with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III at a security event in Singapore, further dampening the prospects for a relaxing of tensions.

China has also cited access to its senior leaders as a reward for acquiescence to its terms, causing some experts to question whether these exchanges are worth pursuing. The Pentagon has criticized China for rejecting such invitations, stating that it is “concerning” and “unwilling to engage” with the U.S. on key military issues. Despite this, both countries have reasons to seek a truce. The U.S. wants to open lines of military communication, as both countries’ militaries patrol disputed regions, leading to unforeseen conflicts.

Chinese officials, on the other hand, are eager to restart trade talks with the U.S., which can potentially revive the country’s domestic economy. China would also like to participate in APEC later this year and meet with President Biden. While the U.S. believes that it is vital to maintain a channel of communication to prevent a potential conflict, China sees this as a tool for suppression. Analysts suggest that this conflict could escalate, leading to a dangerous confrontation. However, both countries say that they want to arrest this downward spiral of the relationship and restore cordiality.
