Photo: Square Enix Today, Square Enix announced that after seven years, Dragon Quest Builders is making its way to PC in early February for the first time. Released in 2016, Dragon Quest Builders is an open-world survival game that combines the building aspects of Minecraft with the lore of Dragon Quest. Players can enjoy creating and exploring while following pre-written stories and quests. It initially launched on PS3 and PS4 before arriving on the Switch in 2018, and later on mobile devices. However, it has never been available on PC until now. On January 29, it was revealed that the game will arrive on PC on February 13, marking a significant shift after a decade of being absent from the platform.
The surprising aspect is the timing, as the sequel, Dragon Quest Builders 2, had already been available on consoles and PC in the United States since 2019. Square Enix is also offering a bundle on Steam that includes both games in one package. While it’s great to see the game finally reaching PC and becoming accessible to a wider audience, the timing of this release raises questions. It’s uncertain why it took so long for the original game to make its way to PC, especially considering the sequel’s previous availability. Additionally, it prompts curiosity about whether Xbox players will have the opportunity to experience Dragon Quest Builders in the future. Although the sequel arrived on Xbox in 2021, the original game had not been ported to the platform. With the PC port on the horizon, it raises the possibility that an Xbox port may also be in the works, providing a potential surprise for Xbox gamers in the near future.
