Weber believes it’s time to consider internationalizing the “force de frappe,” a concept originating from the Cold War era.
The leader of the EPP expressed his desire to see a European nuclear defense in the long run. He also suggested exploring options for integrating France’s nuclear armament into European structures, building on Macron’s offer.
The UK, which is not part of the EU, is the other European nuclear power and has around 260 warheads. Weber suggested the need for constructive dialogue with the British to consider their role in European defense, especially in light of the challenges they face post-Brexit.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Putin has escalated his nuclear rhetoric, and Weber emphasized the importance of better outlining the associated risks to the public, even though there is division on issues such as Russia and defense within the Continent.
Weber stressed the need for honesty with the people and not downplaying the threat posed by Putin. He believes that centrist politicians must do a better job of addressing the realities of the situation.
