According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the first American-made Abrams tanks have arrived in Ukraine ahead of schedule.

The tanks will support Ukraine’s ongoing counteroffensive against Russian forces, which is becoming increasingly urgent as winter approaches. Zelenskyy did not specify the number of tanks, but it is expected that the US will deliver a total of 31 over the next few weeks.

“Good news from Minister Umerov. Abrams are already in Ukraine and are being prepared to reinforce our brigades,” Zelenskyy announced on Telegram.

Despite months of struggle, Ukraine’s counteroffensive has been unable to make significant progress against the strong Russian defenses throughout the country.

Ukraine had urgently requested modern tanks earlier this year, and European countries have already sent dozens of German-made Leopards and some British Challengers.

“I am grateful to our allies for fulfilling the agreements! We are looking for new contracts and expanding our supply geography,” Zelenskyy added.

Russia has confirmed the attack on its fleet, stating that Ukrainian forces used 10 cruise missiles and sea drones to target vessels being repaired at the port and ships at sea. The attacks caused fires, damaging two warships and injuring dozens, according to NBC News.

While the exact type of missiles used in the attack remains unclear, Ukraine has demonstrated increasing capability in recent months to target Russian naval assets. The country has received considerable assistance from Western nations since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion last year. This includes advanced weaponry that has helped Ukraine in its fight against Russian forces.
