A permanent virtual exhibit showcasing one of France’s renowned prehistoric sites, the Cosquer Cave, is set to open. The cave is at risk of being submerged due to rising sea levels driven by climate change. Starting this Saturday, visitors in the port city of Marseille can experience the Cosquer Mediterranee, a replica of the cave that is over 30,000 years old. The exhibit consists of visual and audio elements that showcase reproductions of the cave’s famous prehistoric paintings.
THE FRENCH PRESIDENT WAS RE-ELECTED THIS YEAR
The Cosquer Cave, discovered in 1985 by diver Henri Cosquer, is located in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Marseille.
THERE ARE MANY STUNNING CAVES AROUND THE WORLD
The exhibit, which has taken years to develop, offers the public the opportunity to explore the cave, of which only 20% is currently accessible and dry. Officials express concerns that the remaining dry areas of the cave are at risk of being submerged due to climate change.
