Google Might Skip Tensor G3 and Use Tensor G4 for Pixel Fold 2

Google Might Skip Tensor G3 and Use Tensor G4 for Pixel Fold 2

The latest rumors suggest that Google is running tests on the Pixel Fold 2 with the Tensor G4 chip, possibly surpassing the previously anticipated Tensor G3 upgrade. The release of the Pixel Fold 2 may be postponed from the speculated announcement at Google I/O 2024, as it is reportedly still undergoing Engineering Validation Tests, indicating a potential late summer release. The Tensor G4 is expected to be the last custom device developed in collaboration with Samsung, while the 2025 Tensor G5 is projected to be manufactured by TSMC. In the current landscape, it is not uncommon for smartphone manufacturers to venture into creating their own chips. By keeping control over hardware in-house, OEMs can maintain authority over their products, providing capabilities such as ensuring seven years of software support. Following this path, Google has developed its own Tensor device focusing on AI neural processing tasks, as evident in Pixel devices. The debut of the Pixel Fold in 2023 showcased the Tensor G2 chip. However, with ongoing development of its successor, rumors hint towards a probable use of the Tensor G4, diverging from the initially expected Tensor G3. An unnamed source disclosed to Android Authority that Google has been conducting tests on the Pixel Fold 2 with the Tensor G4 chip, internally identified as “zumapro,” for several months. The slight alteration in the SoC codename, from “zuma” for Tensor G3 to “zumapro” for Tensor G4, underscores the transition between the two iterations. Despite initial testing with the Tensor G3, a source from Android Authority indicated that Google has opted for the Tensor G4 for the upcoming Pixel Fold 2. It appears that the launch of the Pixel Fold 2 is still a considerable distance away, potentially missing the I/O 2024 event and remaining in the Engineering Validation Test phase, several steps away from Mass Production. Furthermore, there is speculation that if the device were to be unveiled at I/O, it might still feature the Tensor G3, but a late summer release could see the introduction of the Tensor G4.

Regardless of its release timing, the Pixel Fold 2 is anticipated to pose a significant challenge in the expanding market. Samsung has set the benchmark with its Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip devices, driving attention with their innovative designs. If the Pixel Fold 2 expands its lineup with a clamshell variant, it could present formidable competition against Samsung’s upcoming device, the Samsung Z Flip.

If the Pixel Fold 2 incorporates the Tensor G4, it is reportedly with the assistance of Samsung, implying that Google has collaborated with its competitor in the chip’s development, as it prepares for the TSMC-manufactured Tensor G5 in 2025. The anticipated features of the G4 include a Cortex-X4 CPU, an Immortalis-G715 GPU, and Cortex-A720 and Cortex-A520 CPU cores. Additionally, the company is anticipated to integrate the SF4P technology previously used in Samsung phones. Despite these rumors, neither company has confirmed these details, so it’s advisable to await official announcements before considering a foldable phone as an option now.
