Google’s Measures to Prevent Unauthorized App Installations in Singapore

The goal is to block third-party apps from misusing Android permissions to access passwords sent via SMS and notifications. According to Google, fraudsters exploit four permissions to carry out financial fraud, and these applications are often manually installed on the device, rather than through the Play Store. The company mentions in a blog post that over 95% of these installations come from online sources. When attempting to install such apps, users in Singapore will encounter a message from Google stating that the app could pose a risk of theft or financial fraud.

This real-time security feature, initially introduced in India, aims to prevent users from downloading malicious software. In response to TechCrunch’s tests on more than 30 malicious apps, Google’s security successfully blocked most of them, with only a few rental apps being installed. According to Scott Westover, a Google spokesperson, the real-time scanning added to Google Play Protect is designed to combat malicious apps, regardless of their source. The feature has been expanded to cover new locations, including Thailand, Singapore, and Brazil. Google has also cautioned app developers to adhere to the Mobile Unwanted Software policy and guidelines, suggesting the possibility of extending the program to other countries. Eugene Liderman, Head of Android Security Strategy at Google, stated that alongside the CSA, they will monitor the program’s progress and make adjustments as necessary. Notably, Google has faced challenges with fraudulent loan apps in locations such as India and Africa. In response, the company implemented a new policy to prevent credit programs from accessing users’ photos and messages.
