A fox spotted near a Taneytown neighborhood has been found to be positive for rabies, as per the Carroll County Health Department. The carcass of the animal was discovered near Starboard Court in the Windy Hills neighborhood off Trevanion Road in Taneytown. County health officials mentioned that the fox had been seen in the area for a few days before its carcass was found.
Health experts are worried that people or pets may have been exposed to rabies. “Rabies exposure occurs through bites and scratches or saliva from the infected animal getting into the eyes, nose, mouth or a wound of a person or another animal,” stated Joe Mancuso, the health department’s rabies program manager. Those who suspect exposure to bites, scratches, or saliva from this fox can contact the health department at 410-876-1884 for a risk assessment. Rabies is commonly seen in raccoons, cats, skunks, foxes, groundhogs, and bats in Maryland, but can also be seen in other animals like dogs, ferrets, deer, and even cows and other farm animals.
“Observe wildlife and animals you don’t know from a distance, and keep your pets vaccinated,” advised Mancuso. “If you see a sick or wounded animal, or one that is acting strangely, call Animal Control at 410-848-4810.” Those who have been bitten or scratched by a wild or stray animal should wash the area with soap and water for several minutes and keep the pet away from other people and pets. They should then call a physician or veterinarian and the health department at 410-876-1884. The health department also plans to host rabies vaccination clinics on April 7 and Sept. 15 from 2-4 p.m. at the Ag Center in Westminster for $10 per pet.
