Helldivers 2 has become Sony’s top game on Steam, despite receiving a ‘mixed’ reception from players. Arrowhead Game Studios’ collaborative game is published by Sony Interactive Entertainment on PS5 and PC via Steam. While Sony doesn’t release player numbers for PlayStation games, Valve does for Steam games. On February 8, Helldivers 2 reached the highest number of players at one time, with 81,840 players, overtaking Sony’s God of War from Santa Monica, which had 73,529 players when it launched on PC two years ago, according to SteamDB. Yesterday, @helldivers2 became the most played Steam game published by @PlayStation, with 81k players. Previously, God of War held the record with 73k players. pic.twitter.com/Ki0cJtdi4n— SteamDB (@SteamDB) February 9, 2024 The PC success of Helldivers 2 comes despite launching on the same day as the PS5 version, which is a rare move for Sony. For instance, Sony released IllFonic’s Predator: Hunting Grounds across PS4 and PC on the same day in April 2020. Helldivers 2 is also the top-selling game by revenue on Steam, surpassing popular titles such as Palworld and Call of Duty. It’s important to note that Helldivers 2 is not a full-price game, but a bargain at $39.99. Whether Sony will disclose its performance figures remains to be seen. The recently released Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is unavailable for PC, and Sony has not confirmed a PC version. Stellar Blade’s Shift Up game and Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin have been announced as PS5-only releases. Concord, the new PvP multiplayer shooter from Firewalk Studios, is set to launch on both PS5 and PC. Helldivers 2 ScreenshotsDespite Helldivers 2’s success on Steam, it has received ‘mixed’ user reviews, with some users experiencing issues causing problems on PC. Arrowhead has released a Steam patch that appears to have addressed similar issues and other crash problems on PC. “Anyway, we hope this quick patch goes a long way to improving your experience. Now go smash those bugs (and bots)!” Wesley is IGN’s UK News Editor. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. You can email Wesley at wesley_yinpoole@ign.com or privately at wyp100@proton.me.
