Apple’s most recent software update, version 17.3, includes an important feature called Stolen Device Protection. This feature has garnered attention due to the increase in theft and exploitation of Apple devices. Many users have reported significant financial losses as well as the loss of important data and memories due to theft. According to technology reporter Joanna Stern of the Wall Street Journal, thieves have been taking advantage of vulnerabilities in Apple’s software and people’s behaviors to steal devices. The stolen devices are then quickly locked, making it harder for victims to track or retrieve them. Stern highlights that older individuals are also increasingly falling victim to this type of crime. Law enforcement agencies around the world are struggling to put a stop to this trend, but Apple’s Stolen Device Protection feature can provide a solution to this growing issue, as stated by Stern. How to turn on Device Security To enable Stolen Device Protection, ensure your iPhone is updated to the latest version (17.3). You can check this by going to Settings > General > Software Update. Then, search for “Stolen Device Protection” in the settings and follow the prompts to activate the feature. Even if “Automatic Settings” is turned on, you may need to manually toggle the feature. Face ID and Touch ID users will need to go into their settings to enable this feature, and make sure to set up Face ID or Touch ID if prompted. What does this new update do? Upon activating Stolen Device Protection, additional authentication is required to access information on the iPhone. It also prevents unauthorized changes from being made if the user is not in a trusted location, such as their home or office. Various actions, such as using passwords, payment methods, turning off Lost Mode, deleting personal data, or requesting a new Apple Card number, will require Face ID or Touch ID authentication. To ensure your iPhone recognizes your trusted location, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Service Center. Make sure the Service Center is turned on. Is there any reason NOT to use Anti-theft Device Protection? The only inconvenience reported is when users want to switch to a new phone, as they may have to wait one hour to complete the change. However, despite some limitations, this feature is an effective deterrent to theft.
