Arkham Origins, the first game not created by Rocksteady, is developed by WB Montreal. Set two years into Batman’s career, the game sees him survive a treacherous winter night in Gotham. On Christmas Eve, crime lord Black Mask offers a $50 million reward for the Dark Knight’s head, attracting eight of the world’s deadliest assassins. After dodging attacks by Killer Croc, Electrocutioner, and Deathstroke, Batman discovers that Black Mask was not killed but kidnapped by the Joker. The Joker then masquerades as Black Mask and controls his criminal empire, eventually attempting to take Batman’s life. Following a riot, Joker overtakes Blackgate prison and forces Batman and the GCPD to intervene. In the ensuing showdown, Batman outwits the Joker by deceiving him into believing that Batman has killed him. With Joker incarcerated, Batman manages to thwart his plans and brings him to justice.
Arkham Asylum starts with Batman escorting the captured Joker to a well-known institution. There, Batman faces off against the Joker’s accomplices and the Scarecrow’s fear toxin. He uncovers Dr. Penelope Young’s experiments on Bane, leading to a revelation that the Joker aims to create a powerful version of the Venom steroid. In Arkham City, Mayor Quincy Sharp transforms Gotham into a sprawling prison named Arkham City due to Blackgate Prison’s overflow. Bruce Wayne is imprisoned within Arkham City, encountering various adversaries and uncovering a nefarious plan known as Protocol 10. Batman strives to counteract Protocol 10, freeing allies and confronting adversaries to protect the city. In Arkham Knight, Gotham experiences a period of tranquility following the Joker’s demise, until the Scarecrow resurfaces with a new threat. Batman faces the Scarecrow and a new adversary, the Arkham Knight, as they wreak havoc on the city. Batman deals with personal challenges and formidable opponents, including the Joker’s lingering influence from a prior blood transfusion. Despite facing countless trials, Batman perseveres and thwarts the villains’ destructive plans, restoring peace to the city.
After seemingly restoring peace to Gotham, Bruce activates the Knightfall Protocol, which leads to a dramatic explosion at Wayne Manor. Subsequently, reports surface indicating Batman’s potential return and his involvement in the Justice League’s mission. The situation is dire as Metropolis faces a Brainiac-type crisis and the Justice League falls under Brainiac’s control. This catastrophic turn of events prompts Amanda Waller to deploy the Suicide Squad to neutralize the threat.
