Are you worried about the possibility of your car being stolen by thieves? You have every reason to be concerned. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), approximately two cars are stolen every minute in the US. This means that there are about 2,736 car thefts per day or 82,080 car thefts per month.
This topic has become a concern for Perry from Germantown, Tennessee. Perry emailed a question regarding anti-theft measures:
“We just had an employee’s brand new Ford F150 stolen. How do we prevent this from happening? I’ve heard that thieves have all kinds of hacking technology. Is ‘The Club’ a good device for the steering wheel? Help is here!”
I’m sorry to hear about your employee’s stolen car. It’s a very unfortunate situation, and I hope that the police are able to recover the car and apprehend the criminal soon.
Car theft is a significant problem that affects many people every year. Thieves can use various methods and technologies to break into and steal cars, regardless of whether the car is old and lacks modern security features or brand new with all the latest technology.
Thieves Steal Luxury Cars
Thieves have discovered numerous ways to use and circumvent the latest car theft technology. Let’s take a look at some of these methods:
Key Cloning
Thieves use a device that scans and copies the codes from car keys when they are in close proximity, such as at a gas station or in a parking lot. They can then use the copied key to unlock and steal the car.
Signal Blocking
Criminals can use a device that blocks the signal from the car’s key fob while the driver is attempting to lock the car. This leaves the car unlocked and vulnerable to theft.
Battery Sleuth
Thieves use a device that detects voltage fluctuations in electric cars and sends an electronic fingerprint that allows the car to start without needing the actual key or other authentication methods.
Messaging Hacking
Criminals use a device that captures and amplifies a signal from a key fob inside someone’s home. They then send this signal to another device near the targeted car, tricking the car into thinking the key is present.
Headlights Rip Them Off
Thieves can also use a hidden device, such as a Bluetooth speaker, to connect the car’s electrical wiring to the headlight switch. This allows them to unlock the doors and start the engine.
How to Prevent Car Theft
If you want to make it harder for thieves to steal your car, consider implementing some of these preventive measures:
Use Strong Passwords to Protect Against Hackers
If you own a keyless car, it’s important to be cautious. Car thieves are becoming increasingly tech-savvy and may attempt to gain access to your car through online accounts and the software associated with your vehicle. To prevent this, always use strong passwords for all your apps and accounts. Consider using a password manager to create and store complex passwords. And, of course, never share your password with anyone.
Use an Airtight Bag
If you have a car with a keyless entry system, you can protect your keys from being stolen or cloned by purchasing an airtight bag, also known as a Faraday Bag. These bags block all signals from your keys, including WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and RFID. Keeping your keys inside such a bag will prevent thieves from intercepting the signals and gaining access to your car.
Get a Remote Car Ignition
If you own an older car without a remote start feature, consider installing a remote car ignition. This device allows you to start your car’s engine remotely. However, you still need the actual key to drive the car, preventing unauthorized use. A remote car ignition is especially useful in cold weather, as it allows you to warm up your car before getting inside.
Have a Smart Car Alarm
A smart car alarm not only triggers a loud alarm when someone attempts to break into your car but also sends an alert to your smartphone. This alert can notify you and the authorities, helping scare off the thief and potentially leading to their apprehension.
Install a Kill Switch
Consider installing a kill switch in your car’s ignition, fuel line, or battery. This switch prevents the car from starting unless it is deactivated. Always remember to activate the kill switch every time you park your car. Thieves will have a difficult time starting the car if they cannot find or disable the kill switch.
Use AirTags to Track Your Vehicle
By placing AirTags in your car, you can track its location. It’s advisable to have at least two AirTags in your car at all times. However, make sure to hide them in a discreet location to prevent thieves from noticing and removing them. If you plan on using AirTags in company cars, it’s essential to inform your employees to avoid any invasion of privacy concerns.
Use The Club for Steering Wheel Locking
The Club is still a reliable device to deter thieves and prevent them from stealing your car. It’s a visible anti-theft device that attaches to your steering wheel, making it challenging to drive the car. The Club claims to be resistant to cutting, chipping, hammering, and freon attacks. However, it’s always recommended to use it in conjunction with other security measures for better protection.
Type Your VIN in Your Window
Consider using a permanent marker to write your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on your car’s windows. A car with a visible VIN is less attractive to thieves, as it becomes easier for law enforcement to track. Additionally, it becomes challenging for thieves to sell any stolen auto parts with a visible VIN.
Close Your Doors and Windows
Always ensure that your car’s doors are locked and the windows are closed whenever you are not inside the vehicle. It’s also crucial to remember to take your keys with you whenever you leave your car unattended. These simple actions significantly reduce the risk of theft.
Park in Well-Lit and Busy Areas
Thieves tend to target cars parked in dark and isolated areas where they can commit crimes without being noticed. Whenever possible, park your car near security cameras, street lights, public entrances, or, ideally, in a locked garage.
Do Not Leave Valuables in Plain Sight
Even when your car is locked, visible valuables can tempt thieves to break the windows. Ensure that you either take your valuable items with you or conceal them in the glove compartment, trunk, or under the seat.
Kurt’s Top Priority
Car theft is a serious problem that can cause financial and emotional distress. By following these preventive measures, you can significantly enhance the security of your car and decrease the likelihood of it being stolen. Remember to diligently lock your doors and windows, consider additional security measures such as a remote car ignition, smart alarm, or kill switch, and avoid leaving valuables exposed.
