BREAKING NEWS. THIS IS WYFF NEWS FOUR TODAY COMING UP, BREAKING BARRIERS. HOW TWO SOUTH CAROLINA CHURCHES ARE COMING TOGETHER AFTER YEARS OF DIVISION. PLUS A WEEKEND FULL OF OUTDOOR MARKETS. WE’RE SHOWING YOU SOME OF THE BEST IN OUR REGION. GOOD MORNING. I’M PEYTON FURTADO. THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH FOR JOINING US HERE ON YOUR SUNDAY MORNING. IF YOU’RE. GETTING UP, GETTING READY TO GO, LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR WEATHER RIGHT NOW. GET YOU PREPARED FOR THE DAY. IS OUR LAURENS SKYCAM 73 DEGREES. OUT THERE YOU SEE A FEW CLOUDS IN THE SKY, BUT BEAUTIFUL BLUE SKY JUST BEHIND IT. WE HAVE SYDNEY SULLIVAN IN THE STUDIO WITH US TODAY. SYDNEY, I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE GETTING UP, GETTING READY FOR THE MORNING. WHAT DO THEY NEED TO KNOW TO BE PREPARED? WELL, WE ARE STILL LOOKING AT A VERY TYPICAL SUMMERTIME PATTERN WITH MILD TEMPERATURES AND THE POSSIBILITY OF SEEING SOME AFTERNOON AND EVENING SCATTERED SHOWERS AND STORMS. YOU’LL NOTICE TODAY THOUGH, OUR TEMPERATURES AREN’T GOING TO BE QUITE AS HOT THIS AFTERNOON, SO A LITTLE BIT OF RELIEF IS HEADED OUR WAY. IT’S STILL GOING TO BE MUGGY THOUGH, SO NOT A LOT OF RELIEF, BUT HEY, WE’LL TAKE EVERY BIT THAT WE CAN GET. TEMPERATURES RIGHT NOW SITTING AT 74 IN ANDERSON, 75 IN GREENVILLE, 73 IN SPARTANBURG AND 71 IN ASHEVILLE. SO STILL A MILD START. NOT QUITE AS WARM AS SOME OF THE MORNINGS WE’VE SEEN THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS, BUT STILL OVERALL, WE ARE LOOKING AT A VERY WARM START TO OUR SUNDAY AS WE LOOK AT OUR LIVE SUPER DOPPLER FOUR DRY CONDITIONS FOR THE TIME BEING, WE’VE GOT A LITTLE BIT MORE CLOUD COVER THIS MORNING, BUT SOME SUNSHINE IS STARTING TO BREAK ON THROUGH, SO IT’S MAKING WAY FOR A NICE START TO YOUR SUNDAY. IF YOU’RE TRYING TO GET OUT AND ABOUT TODAY, I WOULD SAY EARLIER IN THE DAY IS GOING TO BE THE BEST TIME TO DO SO. THERE’S STILL A SMALL CHANCE THAT YOU COULD SEE A SPOTTY SHOWER OR TWO, BUT IT’S REALLY ONCE WE GET INTO THIS AFTERNOON AND INTO THE EVENING, WHERE WE WILL WHERE WE WILL SEE A BETTER CHANCE FOR MORE WIDESPREAD SCATTERED SHOWERS AND STORMS. WE NEED THIS RAIN. SO THIS IS GOING TO BE VERY BENEFICIAL FOR US. MIGHT IMPACT YOUR SUNDAY PLAN. SO DO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON OUR FORECAST IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE OUT AND ABOUT, AS YOU WILL LIKELY NEED AN UMBRELLA, ESPECIALLY LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO THE EVENING. BUT COMING UP, I’LL HAVE A CLOSER LOOK AS TO WHERE OUR TEMPERATURES GO FROM HERE AND THE LATEST STORM TIMING. PEYTON. THANK YOU SYDNEY AND SATURDAY PEOPLE IN CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, BOARDED UP WINDOWS AHEAD OF BARREL, WHICH IS FORECAST TO BRING HURRICANE FORCE WINDS, SEVERAL INCHES OF RAIN. PEOPLE CAMPING ON THE GULF COAST ALSO PREPARING, PACKING UP, MOVING TO HIGH GROUND. HURRICANE BARREL HAS ALREADY TORN THROUGH PARTS OF THE CARIBBEAN AND MEXICO, KILLING AT LEAST NINE PEOPLE. DEPUTIES SAY 18 YEAR OLD BRANDON GREEN IS ACCUSED OF SETTING TWO FORD TRANSIT VANS ON FIRE AT PHILADELPHIA BAPTIST CHURCH, THIS AFTER DEPUTIES GOT A CALL ABOUT A SUSPICIOUS PERSON ON THE CHURCH’S PROPERTY WHO LEFT IN A TRUCK. GREEN IS BEING CHARGED WITH TWO COUNTS OF ARSON. AND TWO CHURCHES ON SOUTH CAROLINA’S JAMES ISLAND ARE BREAKING DOWN RACIAL BARRIERS IN A VERY REAL WAY. REPORTER SOPHIA RADEBAUGH SHARES THEIR STORIES OF HOPE AFTER DECADES OF DIVISION. THERE’S DECADES OF HISTORY BETWEEN JAMES ISLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AND SAINT JAMES PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. THE TWO CHURCHES USED TO BE ONE HERE. YOU KNOW, BLACKS AND WHITES DID WORSHIP WITH THE AFRICAN-AMERICANS IN THE BALCONY AND THE WHITES ON THE ON THE FLOOR. BUT AFTER JAMES ISLAND PRESBYTERIAN BURNED DOWN THE CHURCH SPLIT, THE WHITES WENT TO ONE OF THE CHURCH MEMBERS HOMES, A PLANTATION. BUT THE BLACKS COULDN’T COME. AND SO THEY WALKED DOWN THE STREET AND BEGAN TO HAVE WORSHIP UNDERNEATH AN OAK TREE DOWN IN THAT DIRECTION, WHERE THE CHURCH STILL IS. THE WHITE MEMBERS STAYING AT JAMES ISLAND PRESBYTERIAN AND THE BLACK MEMBERS FORMING THEIR OWN CHURCH. SAINT JAMES PRESBYTERIAN. SINCE THAT SPLIT, THE CEMETERY WHERE MEMBERS OF BOTH CHURCHES HAVE BEEN BURIED FOR DECADES REMAINED SEGREGATED, SEPARATED BY A FENCE. THIS IS WHERE THE BARRIER USED TO BE. OKAY, RIGHT IN, RIGHT IN HERE. BUT IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS, THE PASTORS OF BOTH CHURCHES, REVEREND TRICIA PETROVAN AND REVEREND DOCTOR BRIAN HENDERSON, DECIDED THE BARRIER BETWEEN THE TWO NEEDED TO COME DOWN. THE TWO CHURCH BODIES CAME TOGETHER. ONE SATURDAY AND REMOVED THE BARRIER WITHIN AN HOUR. YOU HAD ALL THOSE POSTS WERE GONE. ALL THE CABLE WAS OUT. NOW THE TWO CHURCHES ARE PUTTING UP PEACE POSTS WHERE THE FENCE USED TO BE WITH WORDS ON THE POSTS LIKE REMORSE, TRUTH AND PARTNERSHIP. IT’S A WHOLE LITANY OF WORDS THAT WE THINK NEED TO CHARACTERIZE THIS RELATIONSHIP. ARE BOTH PASTORS SAYING EVEN THOUGH THE PAINS OF THE PAST CAN’T BE CHANGED, BUT THEY CAN FOCUS ON IS HEALING. WHEN PEOPLE WALK THROUGH HERE, THEY WILL SEE WHAT WAS DONE TO FURTHER THE UNITY THAT WE CLAIM IN OUR FAITH. THAT WAS SOPHIA RADEBAUGH REPORTING. AND IF YOU VISITED TRAVELERS REST YESTERDAY, YOU COULDN’T HAVE MISSED THE FARMERS MARKET. IT WAS A HUGE ENDEAVOR TO ADD MORE THAN 85 LOCAL VENDORS RIGHT OFF THE SWAMP RABBIT TRAIL. LIVE MUSIC, FREE ACTIVITIES. YOU COULD SHOP FOR SOME LOCALLY SOURCED MEATS, VEGGIES, FRUITS, AND A WHOLE LOT MORE. WE’VE GOT BAKERIES, WE’VE GOT FRESH FRUITS AND VEGGIES FROM THE FARMS. WE’VE ALSO GOT A REALLY COOL PROGRAM CALLED YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS, SO THEY GET TO HAVE YOUNG, YOUNGER KIDS FROM THE AREA COME AND APPLY TO BE A VENDOR. SO WE’VE GOT SOME KIDS SELLING EARRINGS AND CHARCUTERIE BOARDS AND STICKERS, AND THEY’RE ALL UNDER 15, WHICH IS REALLY COOL. AND IF YOU MISSED IT, DON’T FRET. THE MARKET IS EVERY SATURDAY FROM 830 UNTIL NOON THROUGH SEPTEMBER, AND ANOTHER LOCAL MARKET HERE IN GREENVILLE TOOK ON A TASTE OF THE BIG TOP. TAKE A LOOK AT THIS. LOOKS LIKE FUN. THE MARKET HAD A CARNIVAL THEME WITH FACE PAINTING, GAMES AND COTTON CANDY. HAD A LIVE PERFORMANCE BY AP AND SOULFUL TUSH. IT ENTERTAINED THE MORE THAN 20 WOMEN AND MINORITY ENTREPRENEURS WHO ARE ALL HIGHLIGHTED AT THAT EVENT. I THINK IT’S EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, ESPECIALLY FOR OUR ECOSYSTEM. UM, TO MAKE SURE THAT THESE DOLLARS ARE CIRCULATING IN THE COMMUNITY. WE HAVE ENTREPRENEURS THAT HAVE AMAZING IDEAS. THEY JUST DON’T GET THE ATTENTION THAT THEY NEED. SO WE WORK AS A CATALYST TO GET THEM OUT TO THE PEOPLE. AND THAT WAS IN GREENVILLE. A SCHOOL SUPPLY DONATION DRIVE ALSO HELPED OUT WITH SOME LOCAL STUDENTS OVER THERE IN PICKENS COUNTY HELD THEIR ANNUAL INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION YESTERDAY. IT WAS FILLED WITH EXCITEMENT AND ENTERTAINMENT. FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. OUR JAMYA JAMYA HAS THOSE DETAILS. THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE. WE LOVE AMERICA AND IT’S GREAT FOR THE COMMUNITY. IT’S THE INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION AT THE PICKENS AMPHITHEATER. IT’S GREAT WE LIVE LIKE A MILE AWAY. I MEAN, IT’S SO MUCH FUN. THERE’S LIVE MUSIC, FOOD, RIDES FOR KIDS AND OF COURSE, FIREWORKS. WE CHOSE TODAY BECAUSE SO MANY PEOPLE DID THINGS ON THE FOURTH AND WE THOUGHT, WELL, LET’S DO IT ON SATURDAY NIGHT. AND THEN YOU KNOW, WE CAN GO FROM THERE AND SEE HOW IT GOES. SO IT WORKED OUT PRETTY WELL. IT’S A CAN’T MISS FAMILY EVENT. THIS IS TOO EASY TO DO. YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? AND ALL THE PEOPLE YOU CAN’T ASK FOR BETTER THIS EVENT BRINGS OUT ALL AGES. WE HAVE SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY. THAT WAS OUR JAMYA JAMYA REPORTING ON THAT. THAT EVENT WAS FREE AND WE’RE TOLD IT WAS THE BIGGEST CROWD THEY’VE EVER HAD AT THIS POINT. AND COMING UP LATER THIS MORNING, WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE OUR SERIES FOUR WAYS WE WIN ON FOR THE RECORD, WE’RE GOING TO DISCUSS SOME EDUCATION. OUR NIGEL ROBERTSON TALKS WITH LEADERS FROM THE UNITED WAY ON TRACK GREENVILLE AND GREENVILLE COUNTY SCHOOLS. WE HAVE AN INCREDIBLE SCHOOL SYSTEM IN GREENVILLE COUNTY SCHOOLS SERVING NEARLY 80,000 STUDENTS. AND OF COURSE, WE KNOW THAT ABOUT 60% OF THEM ARE FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH AND WELL, NOT A FULL INDICATOR FOR WHAT THEY MIGHT BE FACING AT HOME OR IN THE COMMUNITY. WE DEFINITELY KNOW THAT OUR KIDS ARE COMING TO SCHOOL NEEDING MORE THAN JUST AN EDUCATION. JOIN US THIS MORNING AT 1130 FOR THAT FULL CONVERSATION ON EDUCATION IN GREENVILLE COUNTY.
