On September 7, Apple released iOS 16.6.1, just a few days before the official unveiling of the iPhone 15, Apple Watch Series 9, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 at its “Wonderlust” event. While Apple also announced the release of iOS 17 to the public on Monday, September 18, it is important to download the iOS 16.6.1 update now. This update addresses two security vulnerabilities that can be exploited, including the use of zero-day exploits.
To download this update, go to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone, and follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
Apple has stated that this iOS update includes two important features that can be quickly utilized.
One of the issues addressed by the update is a security vulnerability in the Wallet app. Apple explains that a maliciously crafted connection could lead to unintended code execution, potentially allowing an attacker to steal your data or compromise your device for malicious purposes, according to IT Services company Okta.
Furthermore, Apple acknowledges the assistance of the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto’s Munk School in identifying and addressing these vulnerabilities. The Citizen Lab described the incident as a zero-click, zero-day exploit and discovered it on the device of an individual employed by a human rights organization with international offices based in Washington, DC. The school advises everyone to update their devices immediately.
The second issue addressed by iOS 16.6.1 is a vulnerability in Image I/O, a feature that allows apps to read and write image formats on your iPhone. Apple warns that a maliciously crafted image could also lead to code execution in this case.
