Lyft has rolled out a new feature called Women Plus Connect, which aims to enhance the rideshare experience for both drivers and passengers. This interactive system prioritizes women and single riders, allowing drivers to connect with their preferred passengers. Passengers will see a timer on the app that allows them to indicate their interest or decline.
The Women Plus Connect feature is currently only available for Lyft drivers, but it will be expanded to more riders and cities in the coming months. Initially, it will be available in Chicago, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose.
It is important to note that Women Plus Connect is not guaranteed. If there are no interested customers in the area, drivers and passengers may be connected to men. Lyft has developed this feature in partnership with organizations like the Human Rights Campaign and the National Sheriffs’ Association to enhance safety and inclusion on the platform.
According to David Risher, Lyft’s CEO, Women Plus Connect aims to provide more women and non-business individuals with the opportunity to earn money on their own terms and offer riders more choice. Lyft hopes this feature will give drivers and passengers an additional reason to choose their service.
Rideshare companies, including Lyft and Uber, have implemented safety measures in recent years to improve the well-being of drivers and passengers. Uber, for example, introduced seat belt notifications, Live Help for real-time safety assistance, and audio recording capabilities during rides. In 2019, Lyft added a panic button to the app to help prevent crime and assault. Additionally, there are rideshare programs specifically designed to provide safe transportation for children and women, such as HopSkipDrive and Just Her.
These security measures were implemented in response to a series of assaults and rapes that occurred in ride-hailing services, some of which were fatal. Several lawsuits and fines were imposed on Lyft and Uber as a result.
