Paleontologists have described a brand new genus and species of metriorhynchid crocodylomorph from the Stadthagen Formation of north-western Germany.

The newly-discovered crocodylomorph species lived within the shallow seas of Germany throughout the Early Cretaceous epoch, between 140 and 132 million years in the past.
Dubbed Enalioetes schroederi, the traditional reptile belonged to the circle of relatives Metriorhynchidae.
“Metriorhynchids had clean scaleless pores and skin, flippers, and a tailfin,” defined Dr. Sven Sachs from the Naturkunde-Museum Bielefeld and his colleagues.
“They ate up a lot of prey, together with fast-moving animals like squids and fish, however some metriorhynchid species had massive, serrated enamel suggesting they ate up different marine reptiles.”
“They’re preferrred recognized from the Jurassic length, with their fossils turning into rarer within the Cretaceous.”
A wonderfully preserved cranium of Enalioetes schroederi used to be came across greater than 100 years in the past by way of the German architect D. Hapke in a quarry in Sachsenhagen close to Hannover.
This specimen is the best-preserved metriorhynchid crocodylomorph recognized from the Cretaceous length.
“The specimen is outstanding as it’s one only a few metriorhynchids this is recognized by way of a three-dimensionally preserved cranium,” Dr. Sachs stated.
“This allowed us to CT scan the specimen and so we have been in a position to be told so much in regards to the interior anatomy of those marine crocodiles.”
“The outstanding preservation allowed us to reconstruct the interior cavities or even the interior ears of the animal.”
Enalioetes schroederi offers paleontologists contemporary perception into how metriorhynchids have been evolving throughout the Cretaceous.
“Right through the Jurassic metriorhynchids developed a body-plan radically other from different crocodiles — flippers, tailfin, lack of bony armor and clean scaleless pores and skin,” stated Dr. Mark Younger, a paleontologist on the College of Edinburgh.
“Those adjustments have been diversifications to an increasingly more marine way of life.”
“Enalioetes schroederi presentations us that this development persevered into the Cretaceous, as Enalioetes schroederi even higher eyes than different metriorhynchids — that have been already giant by way of crocodylian requirements — and the bony internal ears have been much more compact than different metriorhynchids, an indication that Enalioetes schroederi used to be almost certainly a sooner swimmer.”
The invention of Enalioetes schroederi is reported in a paper within the Magazine of Systematic Palaeontology.
