Next generation Siri expected to be introduced in iOS 18, ChatGPT style

According to experts, the upcoming iteration of Siri is expected to be powered by an AI interface and is likely to be introduced with iOS 18, with an announcement anticipated at this year’s WWDC. Apple has been under scrutiny for Siri’s performance lag, but a recent report indicates that this is due to the company’s ambitious plans for advanced AI … AppleGPT, which has not been officially confirmed yet. It was reported that Apple has developed its own Large Language Model (LLM) called AppleGPT, being currently used only internally; however, there are speculations that Apple will announce its AI project next year. While this announcement caused AAPL stock to surge, it is cautioned that the enhanced Siri may not be available for use in the near future. Apple aims to launch systems like ChatGPT, although its plans are more ambitious than just releasing its language model tomorrow: it involves on-device processing, including audio and video, not just language processing. Unlike AI systems like ChatGPT, which primarily operate on remote servers, Apple has more ambitious plans to implement on-device processing as evidenced by research papers they have published. This shift towards on-device AI processing may yield benefits in terms of speed and privacy, but it presents challenges in terms of memory usage on mobile devices, which is seen as a key reason for the company’s cautious approach. An initial step towards this objective was seen with the launch of Siri on Apple Watch models in September. The next generation Siri is anticipated to launch in iOS 18, with reports from the Financial Times suggesting a more powerful version of Siri. This major unveiling is expected to take place at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, which typically occurs in June when the company introduces its latest operating system. Morgan Stanley researchers are hopeful for the development of AI-driven mobile applications that could potentially feature the voice assistant Siri, leveraging an LLM.
“Dylan Patel, an analyst at semiconductor research firm SemiAnalysis, mentioned, “In terms of their device chips, they are focusing on AI advancements from a design and architecture perspective,” which aligns with a recent report by an Apple leaker and insights from Apple’s job listings. Approximately half of Apple’s AI services now incorporate “Deep Learning”, indicating the inclusion of AI-powered algorithms – models capable of rapidly generating text, audio, and code.
While speculative, the prospect of a significant Siri revamp this year seems plausible. LLM models like ChatGPT have transformed expectations for AI systems. Although Apple has emphasized privacy as the reason for withholding Siri’s capabilities rivaling those that analyze personal data, it has reached a point where Siri seems outdated, necessitating a change. Utilizing AI to drive Siri’s functions will expand the capabilities of Apple’s intelligent assistant, and on-device improvements will aid the company in enhancing privacy measures. The integration of video and audio aspects provides an enticing prospect for the future.” Photo by Omid Armin on Unsplash FTC: We use paid affiliate links. More information.
