Terence Samuel, a news executive at National Public Radio (NPR), has been announced as the next editor in chief of USA Today. Gannett, the nation’s largest newspaper chain and publisher of USA Today, made the announcement on Friday. Samuel will start in his new position on July 10, succeeding Nicole Carroll, who had led USA Today for five years. Samuel, who is currently a vice president and executive editor at NPR, has also worked at The Washington Post, The Root, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and U.S. News & World Report. In his statement, Samuel expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the groundbreaking newspaper “into a digital future.” Gannett’s chief content officer, Kristin Roberts, welcomes Samuel’s appointment, saying that he will help to accelerate the transformation of USA Today to ensure it remains essential to the readers, viewers, and listeners it serves nationwide. Meanwhile, NPR will conduct a national search to find Samuel’s replacement. Upon joining Gannett, Samuel will face a challenging time with the company currently struggling under debt and multiple rounds of layoffs.
